President Donald Trump announced on the weekend that he has asked the loved ones of a Guard member killed last week to attend the presidential home.
He added that he spoke to her family and they were “devastated”.
Specialist Sarah Beckstrom, 20, was killed in a shooting on last Wednesday in Washington DC.
Her fellow service member, US air force staff Sgt Andrew Wolfe, twenty-four years old, is still in the hospital in serious condition.
Gatherings across the state have taken place in their memory.
The commander-in-chief stated he’s discussed a White House visit for the families of both individuals of the state National Guard.
“I stated: ‘When you’re prepared, because that’s a hard experience, visit the White House. We’re going to recognize her,” Trump told the press. “And in the same way with him, recover or not.”
Community members assembled over the weekend at Webster County high school in the state to pay respects to Beckstrom.
Both they had been serving with the state guard as part of the president’s federal initiative to assist policing efforts in DC.
“Sarah was the kind of student that teachers hoped for. She carried herself with quiet strength, a warm expression and a optimistic attitude that inspired people around her,” the principal, the principal of Beckstrom’s previous school, told the press. “She was caring, compassionate and always eager to help others.”
Memorial plans for Sarah are still being arranged.
Officials have accused a 29-year-old suspect with a charge of first-degree murder and two counts of assault with intent to kill while armed.
The incident prompted the government to halt refugee claims and temporarily stop issuing entry permits to owners of travel documents.
The airman, a native of Martinsburg, began his service in 2019 and is a graduate of Musselman high school, per the Associated Press.
He remains under medical supervision and is “in a critical fight”, West Virginia governor Patrick Morrisey mentioned on a news program.
Attorney general Pam Bondi told the program that she aimed to meet with his relatives.
Beckstrom, from Summersville, graduated from her high school in mid-2023 and joined the military shortly after, serving as a law enforcement officer with distinction, as stated by the military.
“She had a lot of kindness and she certainly had courage,” the governor addressed the audience at the service. “Though her time ended too soon, she has left a mark that’s going to endure.”
