In October of last year, the late-night programming block saw the return of its offbeat hit, Smiling Friends. But, later that same month, the network unveiled a brand-new animated series with a markedly softer feel. Haha, You Clowns was sweet and soothing, evoking a cartoon version of a contemplative talk show. During a period often characterized by dark humor, this show's earnestness found an audience and helped it become a breakout hit.
On December 18th, the network made a major announcement: Haha, You Clowns has been renewed for two more seasons. This gives showrunner Joe Cappa ample opportunity to further explore the world of the Campbell family. The series follows three well-mannered teenage brothers whose primary trait is their deep love for their single father, with Cappa providing the voices for all four central characters.
"My deepest thanks go to the fans of the show who welcomed the series and shared it with others," remarked Cappa. "It's thrilling that I get to hang out at the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."
The official statement also included commendation from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "radically heartfelt and strangely uncanny." He specifically highlighted the fans who embraced the show and advocated for its distinctly quirky sensibility.
"All of you showed up for this new show, championed for it on social media, and expanded its audience week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "As the show says: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was hailed as "a wholesome alternative" to other adult animated fare. Viewers found something unexpectedly cozy about following this lovable family navigate their everyday routines.
In earlier interviews, creator Joe Cappa stated his desire to evolve comedy past its current cynical streak. He attributed this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.
“We're stuck in a cycle of irony that we are trapped in,” explained Cappa. “It feels as if we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for a decade, and we just have to laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”
With this renewal, with Haha, You Clowns locked in for the future, Cappa may well catalyze that change he described. At a minimum, the renewal promises audiences additional episodes to bask in the heartfelt moments of the beloved Campbell clan.
The season 1 finale of Haha, You Clowns airs on December 21st. All episodes is currently streaming on HBO Max.
