Outrage Explodes as Former President Trump's Comments on Director Rob Reiner Draws Sharp Criticism

Individuals from across the political spectrum and the Hollywood industry are uniting to denounce Donald Trump for his remarks following the tragic deaths of renowned filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele.

A Controversial Online Post

Following the discovery of the couple deceased at their Los Angeles residence, Trump posted on social media to label the late director as "tortured and suffering". The message, he claimed Reiner's death was "due to the hostility he provoked others through his massive, relentless, and untreatable affliction with a mind-crippling disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME".

His comments quickly shifted to self-praise, juxtaposing Reiner's alleged "raging obsession" and "clear paranoia" with what Trump described as the "Golden Age of America".

Police Update and Detention

Authorities have since confirmed the detention of the Reiners' adult son, Nick, on charges related to homicide in connection with the incident. Reports indicate his bail was set at a substantial amount.

A Wave of Criticism from Celebrities and Politicians

The reaction to Trump's words was swift and scathing.

“What a disgusting and despicable comment,” remarked actor Patrick Schwarzenegger.

Media personality Whoopi Goldberg, who described Reiner a friend, also condemned the remarks. Goldberg pointed to previous comments from Trump about political violence, asking, "Have you no shame? Can you get any worse?"

California's Democratic governor, Gavin Newsom, succinctly stated, "He is a disturbed man."

Echoing this sentiment, Congressman Maxwell Alejandro Frost said, "He is a despicable piece of trash."

Senator Chris Murphy added, "Trump has just crossed a line. Now saying Rob and Michele Reiner brought on their own murder because they opposed him. Deeply disturbing."

Criticism from His Own Political Ranks

Some GOP lawmakers also expressed dismay.

Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene emphasized that the situation was "a family tragedy, not about politics or rivals". Greene also alluded to challenges with substance abuse and psychological well-being within families.

Another GOP congressman, Thomas Massie, called Trump's remarks "unacceptable and disrespectful" given the nature of the deaths. He openly dared members in his political party to defend the comments.

The Director's Legacy and Views on Trump

Rob Reiner was long a vocal detractor of Donald Trump. During a past interview, he stated Trump was "not psychologically suited" for the presidency. He had also cautioned about the dangers of autocracy if Trump be reelected to power.

"We see authoritarianism making its move around the world," Reiner said. "If we crumble, there’s a risk that democracy collapse around the world."

Regardless of his pointed criticisms, Reiner had previously shown "complete revulsion" and condemned political violence without reservation following the killing of another individual.

A Notable Link: The Art of the Deal

Adding a layer of past irony, Michele Reiner, formerly Michele Singer, was the artist who captured the photograph for Donald Trump's 1987 book, The Art of the Deal.

Rob Reiner had once recounted the story of the photo shoot, mentioning Trump's request for "special hairspray" as posing on a high-rise with a view of Central Park.
