The city's next chief executive, Zohran Mamdani, will opt to live in the iconic Gracie Mansion, vacating the affordable apartment that sparked debate during his campaign.
Dating back to 1799, Gracie Mansion has functioned as the primary dwelling for nearly all New York City mayors since the post-war period.
But, Mamdani, for whom rent control is a key platform, hesitated to declare this decision right away after his victory in November.
"The choice came down to our family's safety and the need to focusing my full attention on enacting the affordability agenda New Yorkers supported," stated Mamdani in a statement.
His home was in the Queens borough of Astoria, an area renowned for its diverse immigrant populations and global cuisine.
"To my neighbors in Astoria: my gratitude for demonstrating the best of New York City," Mamdani's statement said.
"Even though I'm moving in the neighborhood, it will always live inside me and my efforts as mayor," he added.
Throughout his campaign, Mamdani linked his key pledge – to freeze the rent – to his personal living arrangements.
Yet his rivals, including ex-governor Andrew Cuomo, challenged Mamdani for occupying the affordable housing even though he is from a prominent family.
Not all mayors have opted to reside at Gracie Mansion.
Michael Bloomberg, the former mayor, kept his residence in his private home on the Upper East Side throughout his time in office, which ended in 2012.
In his view, Bloomberg said he believed it ought to be a place for civic gatherings, and advocated for an extensive renovation of the older mansion.
As he settles into Gracie Mansion near his first day on 1 January, he will experience a setting far removed from his humble Astoria home.
Featuring cream-colored walls, forest green window covers, and bright white balustrades, Gracie Mansion is an ornate structure with views of the East River.
Within, the lower floor of the Federal-style mansion is furnished in the spirit of the home's historical period.
The estate, which is said to has several bedrooms, also includes increased security measures to secure the mayor and his family.
A number of people have suggested that Gracie Mansion also has ghostly inhabitants.
Chirlane McCray, the spouse of previous mayor Bill De Blasio, told reporters that they experienced doors opening and shutting on their own, and the floorboards made strange noises.
Former Mayor Eric Adams was adamant. "I don't care what anyone says," he declared in 2022. "The place is haunted in there, man."
Mamdani's current apartment is rent stabilised, a policy where the city regulates on how much building managers can increase rent each year.
City residents consider these apartments essential protections as the price of rent outpaces what many can afford.
Records showed Mamdani paid about $2,300 each month for his apartment.
Per figures from the real estate platform Zillow, the median rent for a studio or one-bedroom in New York City is $3,500 a month.
