Former US treasury secretary Larry Summers is leaving the board at the artificial intelligence firm, just several days after a batch of emails between him and notorious criminal the accused trafficker became public.
Summers stated in a statement that he was "grateful for the privilege to have participated, optimistic about the prospects of the enterprise, and anticipate observing their progress".
Summers, who previously headed the Ivy League institution, stated on recently that he would be withdrawing from public responsibilities due to his relationship with Epstein.
The recently released messages showed that the official communicated with the financier until the 24 hours preceding the financier's 2019 apprehension for accused trafficking of underage individuals.
In a separate statement, the artificial intelligence company said it understood the economist's choice to step down.
"We acknowledge his many contributions and the perspective he offered to the directors," the organization stated.
This news comes after both chambers of the legislative branch agreed on Tuesday to pass a bill that would compel the Department of Justice to disclose its files on the case.
The measure will subsequently move to the administration of US President Donald Trump for endorsement. The President has stated he intends to approve the legislation, after modifying his stance on the matter following pressure from his base.
A collection of financier-linked correspondence released by the House Oversight Committee recently included numerous prominent individuals in the billionaire's past associates, without suggesting any legal wrongdoing by those figures.
The messages showed that the professor and Jeffrey Epstein regularly had dinners together, with he often trying to link the official to prominent world leaders.
After the messages were released with the public, the former official expressed he took "total ownership for my ill-advised choice to maintain corresponding with the financier".
He added that he desired "to reestablish trust and mend connections with the people most important to me".
The professor occupied leadership roles under two Democratic presidents; functioning as Treasury chief under Bill Clinton, and as director of the White House economic team under President Obama.
He presided over the institution from the early 2000s and remains a academic there. When declaring his departure from public roles recently on Monday, he indicated he would maintain his teaching commitments.
Following his statement on Monday, the Center for American Progress, a progressive policy institute in DC where the professor was a senior fellow, announced that the economist was not affiliated with the group.
The former official entered the leadership of OpenAI, which develops the language model, in 2023 - following a failed attempt to replace its top executive OpenAI's head.
