Eurovision Used to Be a Whimsical Delight – But It Has Become a Strategic Method to Sanitize Conflict.

A new acronym emerged a few months after the start of Israel’s bombardment of Gaza. Labeled WCNSF, it stands for “Injured child with no living relatives”. This designation is specific to Gaza, per insights from medical experts including child health specialists. Ordinarily, it is uncommon for doctors to attend to a minor who has lost their complete family. Yet, there has been absolutely nothing ordinary regarding the widespread destruction in Gaza, where entire family lineages have been eradicated and the number of young amputees surpasses that of any other place in the world. Nothing normal in many doctors coming back from a sea of ruins with testimonies of children being systematically aimed at.

An Unimaginable Crisis Despite a Announced Cessation of Hostilities

The Gaza Strip continues to be an utter catastrophe. Critical healthcare resources are not getting in those in need, and major human rights organizations contend that atrocities are still being committed. Authorities rejects these accusations, consistent with how it denies everything it is implicated in. But while young survivors are now enduring frigid conditions in temporary shelters, there is a piece of uplifting information: apparently nothing is going to stop the international singing competition from continuing with its declared purpose of “unity and artistic sharing.” The contest will continue to offer a welcoming platform for Israel, even though a number of European countries have now withdrawn in objection. And this, we are told, is what unity manifests as.

Eurovision, of course excluded Russia from participating in 2022 over the “grave situation in Ukraine”. Yet the conflict in Gaza seems treated differently.

A Selective Vision

Disregard the reality that Israel was alleged to have used unfair vote practices last year in what seems to have been an attempt to inject politics into Eurovision. Set aside the news that a three-year-old girl was allegedly fatally struck in Gaza on a recent Sunday. Neglect the data that aggression from Israeli settlers and forced displacement in the West Bank have surged. Disregard the condition that global media are still prevented from unfettered access in Gaza. This entire context, apparently, should be permitted to obstruct of Eurovision’s cherished spirit of unity.

The Pageant Proceeds Amidst Staggering Tragedy

The contest marks seven decades next year – nearly twice the average life expectancy of a person in Gaza at present. The broadcast will air, but it will find it impossible to reclaim the whimsical pleasure it once represented. An institution that once promoted togetherness has now become a blatant mechanism to provide a cultural veneer for conflict.
