Diane Ladd, Celebrated For Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore, Passes Away at 89 Years Old.

The Oscar-nominated actress the celebrated Diane Ladd left us aged 89.

This actor, with credits featured National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation, left this world in her residence in California’s Ojai. This announcement was shared through a message shared by her offspring, award-winning actress Laura Dern, her daughter.

Laura Dern, who performed alongside Diane Ladd in a number of films including Rambling Rose, referred to her as “my amazing hero and my special gift of a mother”, noting that she was present when she passed.

“She was the greatest grandmother, mother, daughter, performer, creative as well as empathetic spirit that felt like a dream come true,” she stated. “We were blessed to have her. She is flying with her angels now.”

Initial Roles and Breakthrough

Ladd’s early career included small roles in TV shows like Perry Mason whereas that decade featured her performing with Jack Nicholson in Chinatown.

That very year, the year 1974, she appeared with Ellen Burstyn in Martin Scorsese’s celebrated film Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore, a classic. Her role earned Ladd her initial Oscar nod for best supporting actress.

Later Decades

In the 1980s, she was seen in the thriller Black Widow, a suspense story plus humorous film Christmas Vacation while also joining the show Alice, a sitcom inspired by the film Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore.

In the subsequent decade, she was given an additional Oscar nomination for supporting actress Academy Award nomination for her part in the David Lynch film the movie Wild at Heart in which she portrayed the mother of her actual daughter Dern’s character. The next year she was awarded another nomination for her performance in Rambling Rose, another movie which included Dern.

“This was the film that Princess Diana picked as her top choice, and she brought us to England for a special screening and a celebration in our honor,” Ladd shared regarding Rambling Rose. “And she sat between us, taking our hands, and weeping, seeing us act.”

That decade featured performances in humorous films The Cemetery Club joining her again with Burstyn, Primary Colors, a comedy about politics, with John Travolta and Alexander Payne’s the movie Citizen Ruth where she played Laura Dern’s mom again. That period also brought her TV award nominations for work in the series Dr Quinn, Medicine Woman, Grace Under Fire and Touched by an Angel.

Partnerships with Her Daughter

She continued to star with her daughter in dramatic comedies the film Daddy and Them, Lynch’s Inland Empire, a surreal film and the series by Mike White comedy-drama series the program Enlightened. She also appeared next to actress Sandra Bullock in the film 28 Days, Anthony Hopkins in The World’s Fastest Indian, a film and with Jennifer Lawrence in the film Joy.

Her later TV roles featured Ray Donovan, a drama plus Young Sheldon.

Behind the Camera

She also authored and oversaw the comedy the movie Mrs Munck featuring her and former husband actor Bruce Dern. “Bruce is an excellent performer,” she said. “It was a privilege to guide him on a project. Indeed, I’m the only woman in recorded history to direct her ex-husband. I make a joke: ‘I say ladies, should you desire retribution, helm a movie with your ex.’ However, I’m joking.”

Personal Life

She was additionally a family member of Tennessee Williams, who she called “a major inspiration throughout my life”.

During 2018, she received an incorrect diagnosis with a respiratory illness and informed she only had half a year left but made a full recovery after her daughter moved her to a new hospital.

“If you can take your pain and avoid letting it accumulate like an injury, instead use it to explore, to illuminate the way for yourself and others, then you are triumphing,” Ladd remarked.
