A whistleblower has disclosed an official investigation that British authorities left behind sensitive technology enabling the Taliban to identify Afghans who collaborated with international military.
The source, identified as Person A, explained that individuals impacted by the security lapse were told to change residences and alter their contact details to avoid detection from the Taliban.
MPs are looking into official handling of a massive breach of personal details involving almost nineteen thousand Afghans who had asked to come to the United Kingdom to escape the regime.
A spreadsheet including their personal data, comprising identities, phone numbers and in some cases relative details, was accidentally leaked by a staff member working at British military command in last year.
The breach was discovered only in August 2023, when the names of nine people who had requested to settle in Britain appeared on Facebook.
It appears there is this misconception that the Taliban do not have the same sort of facilities that we have,” Person A informed MPs.
All equipment was abandoned in Afghanistan; they possess it. Should they obtain a contact number, they can locate your exact position. That's precisely what the unit accomplished.”
When questioned about if militant forces owned necessary encryption, Person A stated: “They have complete capability.”
Preliminary research submitted to the investigation suggested that approximately fifty family members and associates of individuals impacted by the incident had been murdered.
A superinjunction regarding the leak was implemented in last year and restricted any information regarding the matter from being made public until recently.
Because she was restricted, Person A and the aid group she was working with advised affected households they were assisting that they had “concerns that mobile communications had been intercepted”.
“Our suggestion was that they change residence when possible and changed their mobile numbers. These represented the two main details that, if authorities had access to this information, would lead to identification and capture,” the source testified.
The source argued that an official review carried out by a former official had been incorrect to determine that the obtaining of the dataset by the regime was “minimally impact present danger”.
“The crucial point is that affected people are not standing up to militant forces; they remain concealed. Everything boils down to former occupations.”
She detailed disturbing violence endured by at-risk Afghans, comprising electrocution, interrogation techniques, and violent assaults.
“There are cases of toddlers who have had bones crushed to force relatives to reveal locations,” the whistleblower revealed.
